Virtual Phone Numbers for WeChat

About WeChat

WeChat, developed by Tencent, is one of the world's most popular super-apps, combining instant messaging, mobile payments, and social networking in a single platform — with the majority of its user base concentrated in China. Signing up for a WeChat account on any mobile device requires phone verification, which means providing a real mobile phone number. For users who want to protect their identity, a virtual phone number offers a straightforward solution: receive the SMS verification code without exposing your real number. Whether you're registering from a computer or a smartphone, this approach lets you create an account privately using just a temporary number from HeroSMS.

Why Use a Virtual Number on WeChat

There are several key reasons to use a virtual phone number instead of your real mobile phone number:

  • Maintain privacy — A virtual number keeps your personal number private when creating a WeChat profile, preventing it from being linked to your account or email address.
  • Separate personal and business accounts — Virtual numbers let you clearly distinguish accounts used for personal messaging from those used for business communication.
  • Avoid spam — Providing your real number to any mobile app carries the risk of spam. A virtual number reduces this exposure significantly.
  • Enhanced security — Your real number won't be exposed if the account is compromised. Unlike a SIM card tied to your identity, a virtual number adds an extra layer of protection.
  • Accessibility — Virtual numbers work globally, making them ideal for travel or living abroad. Register WeChat from anywhere without needing a local prepaid mobile phone or SIM card.
  • Mobile payment separation — If you use WeChat's built-in mobile payment features, keeping a dedicated virtual number for the account adds an extra barrier against fraud.

FAQ

Yes. WeChat, developed by Tencent, is used globally, and virtual phone numbers from HeroSMS work regardless of your location. You don't need a Chinese SIM card or a local prepaid mobile phone — simply choose a supported country, purchase a number, and complete SMS verification from any mobile device or computer.

Using a virtual number means your real mobile phone number and email address are never shared with WeChat during registration. This protects your privacy, reduces the risk of spam, and ensures your identity isn't tied to the account in case it is ever compromised.

In most cases the verification code arrives within a few minutes of WeChat sending it. HeroSMS is optimised for fast text messaging delivery. If no code is received within 20 minutes, you are automatically refunded.

A virtual number is used for initial account registration and SMS verification. Once your WeChat account is active, access to WeChat's mobile payment features depends on additional identity verification required by Tencent, which may involve linking a bank card. The virtual number itself is not a barrier to exploring the app's instant messaging and other functions from day one.
